The Problem: Bird Droppings & Hygiene Risks

Alternate Approach: Marina Dogs

  • Purpose trained marina dogs were introduced to deter birds without harm.
  • Original intention was to leave a dog on the marina overnight, though this posed its own problems, particularly with them following clients off the marina.
  • Dogs patrolled the docks regularly chasing seagulls.
  • With the amount of bird droppings, bones, fish-hooks, chewing gum etc dog muzzles were introduced to protect the dog’s health. Unfortunately, once the muzzles were contaminated from the droppings the dogs couldn’t effectively sense the birds!
  • This method proved to be effective, but had limitations, so we required something more permanent.
