Swallows nesting inside farm sheds can quickly become a major issue for property owners, creating mess, noise, hygiene concerns, and ongoing maintenance problems. In this project, Bird Control Australia worked with a rural client experiencing persistent swallow activity throughout their machinery and storage shed.

The birds had established regular nesting and roosting behaviour inside the open-sided structure, particularly around rafters and sheltered beams. Traditional deterrent methods had provided little long-term success, and the client needed a solution that was effective without harming the birds.

The shed environment provided ideal protection for swallows:

The Challenge

  • High sheltered beams for nesting
  • Easy access through large open entry points
  • Warm and secure overnight roosting areas
  • Ongoing fouling on equipment and flooring

Over time, bird droppings and nesting materials became difficult to manage and created additional cleaning and maintenance costs.

The Solution

Bird Control Australia recommended a combination of:

  • Targeted laser bird deterrent systems (Hawk Laser 80mW)
  • Ultrasonic bird deterrents (Quadblaster QB4)
  • Strategic placement to disrupt roosting behaviour without affecting farm operations

The system was designed to create an uncomfortable environment for the swallows while allowing normal use of the shed to continue uninterrupted.

The Results

Following installation, swallow activity significantly reduced, with birds no longer comfortably roosting or nesting inside the structure. The client reported a noticeable improvement in cleanliness and a reduction in ongoing maintenance caused by bird fouling.

The non-harmful deterrent approach provided an effective long-term management solution suited to agricultural environments.

Testimonial

“Genuinely hoping the ducks don’t ever get brave enough to learn that the laser won’t physically hurt them, however, very promising results thus far.”

— Jarrod Ingleman, Centre Coordinator

Conclusion

The Hawk Laser system delivered immediate and measurable improvements at Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre, eliminating duck activity while dramatically reducing cleaning requirements, operational costs, and water usage. The project demonstrates the effectiveness of automated laser bird deterrence for aquatic facilities and public spaces
