STAGED SWALLOW DETERRENCE FOR AN UNDERCOVER STRATA CARPARK

The Challenge

A strata property in Queensland was experiencing swallows roosting in its undercover carpark. Concrete slabs, beams and recessed areas provided sheltered perching and roosting spots, while the building’s structure made it difficult for deterrents to reach every affected location.

The Solution

Bird Control Australia recommended a combination of deterrent technologies designed to address the problem across the carpark:

  • 1 × Broadband Pro sonic and ultrasonic bird deterrent system
  • 2 × Bird Laser bird deterrents

The approach combined different technologies to provide deterrence in the areas covered by the installation.

What happened next

The initial deterrents worked well in the areas they covered. Over time, however, the swallows moved to another section of the carpark where a concrete slab obstructed the ultrasonic coverage.

Rather than replacing the original equipment, the customer chose to add targeted deterrence in the remaining problem areas and subsequently purchased 2 × Yard Sentinel RC units.

Key takeaway for strata managers

Undercover carparks can require a tailored combination of bird deterrent technologies, particularly where concrete beams and slabs create sheltered roosting locations or block sound coverage. Assessing the building layout and adapting the solution as bird behaviour changes can help address coverage gaps.

This case study illustrates a practical, staged approach: start with a suitable combination of deterrents, review where birds relocate, and add targeted devices where required.
