Completed August 2023
Client Organisation: Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre & Fraser Coast Regional Council

The Challenge

For more than 8 years, Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre experienced ongoing issues with ducks roosting overnight around the pool complex.

This resulted in:

  • Daily cleaning before opening
  • Excessive water usage
  • Increased labour costs
  • Ongoing presentation and hygiene concerns

Before Installation

  •  Approx. duck numbers: 10–20 ducks nightly
  •  Cleaning labour: 30–60 minutes daily
  •  Water usage: 810L – 1,620L per day

The Solution

Bird Control Australia installed the Hawk Laser bird deterrent system, strategically positioned to discourage ducks from landing and roosting around the aquatic centre.

The automated laser system provided a humane, low-maintenance solution without disrupting facility operations.

The Results

After Installation

  • Duck activity: 0 observed ducks
  • Cleaning labour: Reduced to approx. 5 minutes maximum daily
  • Water usage: Reduced to approx. 135L maximum daily

The facility reported no duck presence during the first week following installation, with substantial reductions in both labour and water consumption.

Impact Summary

Metric Before After
Duck Numbers 10–20 nightly 0
Cleaning Time 30–60 mins ~5 mins
Water Usage 810L–1,620L daily ~135L daily
Cleaning Costs $19.37–$77.48/day ~$3.23/day

Testimonial

“Genuinely hoping the ducks don’t ever get brave enough to learn that the laser won’t physically hurt them, however, very promising results thus far.”

— Jarrod Ingleman, Centre Coordinator

Conclusion

The Hawk Laser system delivered immediate and measurable improvements at Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre, eliminating duck activity while dramatically reducing cleaning requirements, operational costs, and water usage. The project demonstrates the effectiveness of automated laser bird deterrence for aquatic facilities and public spaces
